LOWDOWN

So that "Billy Bob" tattoo wasn't your brightest idea. Don't be blue. Just get it zapped off (along with unwanted hair, spider veins, varicose veins and that mole on your back).

Although Blue Medi Beauty Spa specializes in medical treatments, the modern, curved lines and blue accents in the sparkling white lobby look nothing like a doctor's office. Housed in the historic art deco La Reina Theater, Blue boasts 6,000 square feet of space, with 12 treatment rooms and a juice bar. Laser hair and tattoo removal, Botox injections and IPL FotoFacials are among the quick, relatively painless and mostly noninvasive services (bikini hair removal does get a little personal) you can get on your lunch break or after work. Certified nurses perform the laser treatments that hurt no more than a pin prick or a hair being plucked; there's no reason to fear the laser pointed even at your most intimate parts. The spa even offers different shapes for those creative hairlines, like the Tiffany Box, which includes dyeing a patch blue, and the Swarovski, with stick-on crystals. If you're just looking to relax, the spa also offers massages and facials.—Mai Dinh

LES AESTHETIQUES

PUTTING COLOR TO WORK

Three Steps to find the color story for your salon or spa

When I arrived at a new office in corporate America a few years back, I painted one of my walls my signature shocking neon pink-so bright that it seemed to pulse and throb from the parking lot. The wall was quickly re-painted the corporate gray, in response not to management objection (in fact, I had the boss’ blessing), but because of employee outcry about the incendiary color. My peers couldn’t take the heat.

Strong color produces strong emotion. In nature, vivid colors often are a warning. For instance, the brightly colored nudebranchia (a frilly, psychedelic looking species of sea slug), brilliantly hued butterflies like Monarchs and their caterpillars, and tropical frogs (the kind they use for blow-dart poison) are notoriously bad-tasting. These creatures’ Day-Glo spots, stripes and high-contrast color schemes, so much the antithesis of prudent camouflage, communicate risk or danger… just like my hot-pink office wall, apparently.

THE STRENGTH OF COLOR

Color is power. In the ancient world, purple and scarlet signaled wealth, prestige and authority, probably because the methods of extraction and sources of these colors (a Mediterranean mollusk and a Mexican scale insect, respectively) were painstaking and expensive to harvest.

And it all gets tricky because different colors signal different emotions to different people, at different times. Consider that for least a century; brides in the West have worn white as a sign of purity. To wear shameless scarlet (which Westerners associate with adultery and other scandalous behavior) on your wedding day would still be shocking in some circles. Yet, in many parts of Asia, brides have traditionally worn bold, bright red, inviting vitality and good fortune. In these same parts of Asia, white is worn only for mourning, as it is the absence of all color.

EVOKING FEELINGS

When planning a color scheme for your business, the last things you want to induce is mutiny from the ranks, or send clients screaming back to their cars because they can’t handle the palette. But you do want to evoke specific emotional states and create an incredible journey!

For Ronda Hawara, owner of Blue Medical Beauty Spa in Sherman Oaks, CA, a hue at the opposite end of the spectrum from hot pink has been the key to her success. The spa occupies a classic old structure, the La Reina Theatre, a recognized historic landmark on busy Ventura Boulevard in the heart of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. The signature of the space is sparkling tile and retro-cool furnishings, all in strong cobalt blue. “Our primary motivation in choosing blue was to differentiate ourselves from other spas as well as reinforce the idea that we were offering a completely different type of spa experience. We wanted to avoid the overly sterile look of a medical facility of the faux domesticity that most spas favor. Peachy-flesh tones imply conformity, whereas we wanted to make a statement that transcended the very limited “skin-deep’ perspective. Our blue is vibrant and provocative, reflecting our philosophy that beauty isn’t superficial, but rather a vehicle for empowerment and esteem,” Hawara says of her unique space, which she opened after a massive redesign and remodel in 2003.

Information on Vein Removal

Are unsightly veins getting in the way of your fashion aspirations? Well dig out the mini skirt and search for those short shorts because Blue Medi Spa has just the fix for those vexing veins. It is estimated that up to 80% of females are impacted by spider veins, varicose veins and other vascular lesions. Although these lesions are not generally considered a medical condition, their appearance often impacts an individual’s esteem. Often found in clusters around the knee or thigh, spider veins are undulating, slender and usually purple or red in color. Compared to spider veins, varicose veins are more prominent in size and color, tend to bulge and are more likely to cause discomfort. Varicose veins often indicate an underlying vein disorder or medical condition. Blue Medi Spa offers two vein removal processes, the VersaPulse Aesthetic Laser and Sclerotherapy. Blue Medi Spa’s laser Vein Removal treatment is a non-invasive treatment specifically developed to address broken blood vessels, capillaries, varicose veins, spider veins, and other vascular lesions without significant downtime. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of sclerosing solution that prompts the veins to breakdown and disappear over time. A consultation with a vein removal specialist will provide additional perspective on which treatment option is best and how many treatments will be required to reach the desired effect.
